Ways We Serve
What do the Dominican Friars do?
The work of the friars takes many forms, as our men try to respond to the particular needs of the Church of the Western United States. From our foundation in 1850 we have responded to the call of local bishops to aid in Parochial ministry. Thus we continue to staff parishes throughout the Western United States and in Mexicali, Mexico. Very early on, from 1908 onward, we have been very involved in ministry to students at college and university campuses. It is often through such ministry that young men first meet the Dominicans.
We are engaged in various forms of the preaching apostolate. Our men staff retreat centers, travel as itinerant preachers, offer workshops and parish missions, and are chaplains for hospitals and monasteries of nuns. If there is a way to preach the good news of Jesus Christ and the truth of our faith in Him, there is a Dominican touching on it, whether radio, video, movies, television, Internet, or academic teaching.
We also send our men out to be missionaries in Central and South America, and Eastern Europe and have a history in places as far flung as the Philippines where we continue to support the ministry to the Hansens Disease colony at Tala.
There is no talent or interest which is unimportant. Each Dominican gives of his own capabilities to proclaim the truth of Jesus Christ and to further his salvation and that of those among whom he ministers. Each ministry is valuable, for each allows God's presence to become more evident and celebrated in the world.
May our friars continue to Praise, to Preach, and to Bless.
And through St. Dominic's intercession,
proclaim that Jesus Christ is Lord
