Fr. Benedict John O'Connor, OP
Fr. Benedict was a San Francisco staple for thirty years edifying the friars and serving
the people. He was born in 1865 and joined the Dominicans when he was 16. Fr.
Benedict's first assignment was to serve as Sub-Novice Master in Benicia, an important job
for a Province that was still in its formative years. The next year, he was one of
the first to go to Holy Rosary in Portland, Oregon. After two years there, he was
assigned to St. Dominic's in San Francisco. Ever after, he tried to return to San
Francisco. In 1898 he was elected Prior of St. Dominic's in Benicia, California, but
after his term he returned to the city he loved. He was re-elected Prior of Benicia
and finally was able to return to San Francisco. He served the city of San Francisco
for the next thirty years and was an edifying force in the priory, dying at the age of 69.
