Fr. Steven Maekawa, OP
Fr. Steve is a cradle Catholic and fourth generation
Japanese-American. His mother converted to Catholicism in college and raised
her children in the faith. Fr. Steve grew up with his parents, two sisters
and younger brother in Bellevue, Washington. He met the Dominicans when he
was an architecture student at the University of Washington. After
graduation in 1990 he joined the Order. He was ordained to the priesthood in
1998 and was assigned to St. Dominic’s Parish in San Francisco as an
associate pastor. In 2002 he returned to the University of Washington as the
director of Prince of Peace Catholic Newman center. He later served as prior
of St. Dominic’s Priory in San Francisco. In 2007 he started work as
vocations director for the Western Dominican Province.
Fr. Steve also served as a chaplain in the Navy reserves.
He was a unit chaplain with the Marine reserves and at the Naval Air Station
on Whidbey Island, WA. In 2004 he spent 8 months in Afghanistan attached to
the US Army.
His interests in his spare time are: God, reading,
running, jazz and blues music, and spending time with his Dominican brothers
and family.
