Fr. Basil Edward Kenny, OP
Fr. Basil was born in San Francisco in the late nineteenth century and was given the
baptismal name of Edward. It was at 10:00 AM, on September 23, 1898 that he first
donned the Dominican habit. After studying Philosophy and Theology, he was ordained
a priest in 1904 and assigned to St. Vincent Ferrer Church in Vallejo. He would, in
1912, go on to become the Rector of St. Rose of Lima Church in Vallona, which is now known
as Crockett, California. Eventually, he found his way to Holy Rosary in Portland,
Oregon and become their Procurator, but by the year 1923 he was needed more in Los
Angeles. He became the Assistant Pastor in Los Angeles at our parish, St.
Dominics, in Eagle Rock. There he would take on the responsibilities of Vicar
Coop. He had come to the parish to help pave the way for a school to be added to the
parish church. This task was not easy, and both Fr. Basil and Fr. E. G. McMullan,
Pastor, labored in this effort. However, in less than a year, Fr. Basil died at the
age of 44.
