Fr. Vincent Mary Kelber,
OP
Father Vincent Mary was born November 10, 1977, in a small but well known suburb
of Los Angeles, called Whittier. He was baptized at St. Mary of the Assumption, a Redemptorist parish, in that same city. While still young, his family moved northward to
beautiful Seattle, Washington. He has one sister, six years younger than himself.
Fr. Vincent went to Newport High School, in Bellevue, Washington. He
spent half of his senior year studying at Beijing Shidaxue Erfuzhong in China. He
studied history, philosophy, and the art of mowing soccer fields during his time at
Seattle University, a Jesuit institution.
With the
help of Fr. Robert Spitzer, S.J., one of his professors, Fr. Vincent decided it was
time to pursue the call to priesthood and religious life that had been tugging at him for
several years. After exploring various religious orders he entered the Order of
Preachers. The Dominicans attracted him, because of its both active and
contemplative tradition.
Fr. Vincent entered the novitiate, at St. Albert
Priory, in Oakland California on August 15, 1999. After completing this first
year of Dominican life, he made religious vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience for a
period of three years on September 2, 2000. Fr.. Vincent completed his
studies at the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology, at the Graduate Theological
Union in Berkeley, California.
