Fr. Edmund John Harrington, OP
Sometimes, the brothers and priests who do their duty quietly and well can show us the
beauty of religious life. Such a priest was Fr. Edmund. He was born in Ireland
in 1837 and converted from Anglicanism at the age of 15. He became a Dominican for
the California province and went to study in Woodchester, England. On his return
after ordination there, he ministered at St. Dominic's in Benicia, California and taught
Sunday school at Vallejo. While he was Novice Master, a job which included directing
the students, two students died. He moved back and forth between Benicia and San
Francisco three times. His last assignment in San Francisco lasted for fourteen
years. He died at St. Dominic's in Benicia in 1908.
