Fr. Jordan Eugene Caldwell, OP
Fr. Jordan was one of the first friars of the newly formed Dominican province of
California. He was a member of the first biennial Congregation of California, later
to be known as the Provincial Assembly. Jordan came from Navan, Ireland, traveling
below Cape Horn by sea with soon-to-be Fr. Mannes Doogan,
OP. He was received into the Order at the age of twenty.
He served in San
Francisco at Holy Rosary in 1866 and St. Francis Church in 1868. Returning to
Benicia, California from whence he studied, he became the first known librarian of the
province. He suffered from intense stomach ailments all of his life in the Order,
and died at the age of 42 at St. Dominic's in San Francisco.
