Fr.
Francis Joseph Barragan, OP
Fr. Francis was an inspiration to the Province, showing a constant faith and service to
the Christian Brothers in Napa as their chaplain. He was born in Vallejo in 1871,
just a few years after Dominicans started a mission there. After school in Vallejo
under the Dominican sisters and friars, he joined the Province in Benicia. After
much philosophical and theological study he was solemnly professed and ordained.
His
first ministry was assistant to the Novice Master in Benicia. He went to St.
Dominic's in San Francisco from 1900 to 1902 and then to Martinez. At Martinez he
was assistant and he also was chaplain to the Christian Brothers' Novitiate located there.
He also worked in Walnut Creek until a diocesan priest was assigned there in 1910.
In 1923 Martinez was traded to the Archbishop of San Francisco for Berkeley.
When the Christian Brothers' Novitiate moved to Napa, he was allowed to become a
resident chaplain there. After a short stint in Portland in the 1930's he returned
to minister to the Christian Brothers until his death. He was a constant reminder to
his fellow friars of faithful service. May God grant him rest.
