Fr. Carmen Baptist Mele, OP
A native of Chicago, Fr. Carmen Baptist Mele, O.P., was educated in Catholic schools there. He graduated from Providence College in Rhode Island in 1969 and served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Malaysia for three years. In 1974 he entered the Dominican Order and was ordained a priest six years later. After ministering in a bilingual parish in West Texas, Fr. Mele obtained a Masters of Public Affairs from the University of Texas at Austin. From 1985-1993 he coordinated peace and justice ministries for the Diocese of Fort Worth. During this period he earned a Doctor of Ministry from Texas Christian University.

In 1993 Fr. Mele was missioned to Central America where he preached and assisted with the formation of young Dominicans. Returning to the U.S. in 1998, he became the Promoter of Peace and Justice for both the Diocese of El Paso and the Southern Dominican Province. In 2004-2005 he completed a licentiate degree in moral theology at the Università San Tommaso (“the Angelicum”) in Rome. He served as associate pastor of St. Dominic’s Parish in Benicia, CA, from July 2005 until July 2006 when he joined Western Dominican Preaching.

Fr. Mele has published several articles and booklets including: A Reflection on "Economic Justice for All" in the Form of the Stations of the Cross (The Liturgical Press, 1992); AMy >Great= Uncle Mike" (Newsweek -- electronic edition, October 2, 1999); The Preacher as Storyteller@ (The Priest, September 1999); “A Pastoral Reflection on the Water Crisis” (Diocese of El Paso, 2000); and “A Personal Testimony: The Quality of Life of the Dying" (The Priest, May 2007).

In his free time Fr. Mele enjoys reading and exercising. His favorite authors are John Kananaugh, S.J., Kathleen Parker, and David Brooks. For exercise, Fr. Mele runs, swims, and bicycles.
