The Dominicans Province of the Most Holy Name of Jesus

Fr. Thomas Austin (Augustine) Dyson, OP

Fr. Thomas is known in the Western Province of Dominicans as one of its first authors.  His books on Dominican saints and blesseds opened up a new way for the Dominicans in California to evangelize.  He was born in Rotherham, England in 1846 and grew up Anglican.  He converted to Catholicism at the age of 22 and followed it up with his conversion to religious life.  He changed his name from Owen to Thomas Augustine, but was commonly known as Austin.  He studied as a Dominican at Woodchester, England and Louvain, Belgium.  During his twenty years of service to California, he became Prior at St. Dominic's in Benicia, California twice.  He started the Young Men's Holy Name Society and was generally loved.  May God grant him eternal rest.
