Saints and Blesseds
The Order of Friars Preachers,
The Dominican Order,
has a beautiful history of learning, service and holiness manifested in its saints and blesseds of every age since its foundation by St. Dominic de Guzman. Do enjoy the periodic postings of such stories as are available from various sources, especially our own archives.
Religious Retirement
Our elderly and infirm friars receive the best care we have available to us, as in any family. We rely heavily on the donations of others for our own existence and thus when one of our own becomes incapable of further ministry due to age or infirmity, those same donations help us support the sometimes necessary special care required by such members of our communities.
We prefer to care for our elderly and infirm in our own houses so that the life of a religious community can be a part of a friars life as long as possible. This is also the most economical in many ways. We strive to use donations wisely. But sometimes a care facility is essential. As we, as a Province, do not benefit from the national collection for retired religious, we ask that you assist us in caring for these friars who have prayed, taught, served and ministered for so many years amomg the people of the Western United States and beyond.
Please, in your kindness, consider assisting us in this work of brotherly love.
Many thanks in advance.

It's just the right thing
Fr. Luke Andrew Kelly, OP
Luke Andrew Kelly was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 2, 1922. His early schooling all took place in that city and he entered the regular seminary courses at Quigley preparatory school in 1940. He then passed to Mundelein seminary and St. Louis University and was ordained in Springfield, Illinois for that diocese on March 28, 1948. He returned for several years of further study in the field of education at the University of St. Louis. Shortly after this he moved to the West Coast and was received by Fr. Fulton as a Third Order member on August 4, 1959.
During his early years in the Order he served as caretaker and procurator for Healdsburg, Thousand Oaks, and St. Albert's College. He spent a number of years working with the Fathers on the Mission Band as well as serving as Chaplain at the Dominican Hospitals in Merced and Hanford, California. Much of his preaching work centered around Our Lady of Mercy parish in Merced where he was well loved by the people of that area. His warm heart, great sense of humor, and continual hard work won the admiration of all.
On August 4, 1971, Fr. Scanlon received his solemn vows at St. Peter Martyr Priory in Los Angeles. He became sick while working in the parish at Hilmar, California and died while reciting the Rosary with a Dominican Sister at Mercy Hospital in Merced. He died on August 26, 1972 and is buried at St. Dominic's cemetery, Benicia, California.
