Saints and Blesseds
The Order of Friars Preachers,
The Dominican Order,
has a beautiful history of learning, service and holiness manifested in its saints and blesseds of every age since its foundation by St. Dominic de Guzman. Do enjoy the periodic postings of such stories as are available from various sources, especially our own archives.
Religious Retirement
Our elderly and infirm friars receive the best care we have available to us, as in any family. We rely heavily on the donations of others for our own existence and thus when one of our own becomes incapable of further ministry due to age or infirmity, those same donations help us support the sometimes necessary special care required by such members of our communities.
We prefer to care for our elderly and infirm in our own houses so that the life of a religious community can be a part of a friars life as long as possible. This is also the most economical in many ways. We strive to use donations wisely. But sometimes a care facility is essential. As we, as a Province, do not benefit from the national collection for retired religious, we ask that you assist us in caring for these friars who have prayed, taught, served and ministered for so many years amomg the people of the Western United States and beyond.
Please, in your kindness, consider assisting us in this work of brotherly love.
Many thanks in advance.
Catholicism
It's just the right thing
Fr. Illtud Evans, OP
Illtud Evans was born on July 16, 1913. He was educated in Wales and at Lampeter Theological College. After reception into the Catholic Church and a short experience of journalism, he joined the Order in 1937. He did his theological studies at Blackfriars, Oxford and was ordained on September 19, 1943. He was editor of Blackfriars and Prior of London during the years 1955-58 and contributed regularly to the London Times Literary Supplement and other periodicals.
In the early 1950's he did a great deal of preaching both on the radio and through Mission work. It was due to his interest in preaching and writing, and to the historical bond that has grown between the Province of England and our own province, that Fr. Illtud journeyed to California. His preaching skills were readily apparent and he was in great demand for Diocesan and Religious retreats.
On June 18, 1966 the Master General assigned him to this province. He served as master of the Student Fathers and editor of Season for several years. His influence allowed the latter publication to be associated with Our Sunday Visitor for several years. A serious decline in health caused him to return to England in 1970. He manifested a strong desire to return to this province, but his health prevented this step. He died in Greece on July 22, 1972 while on a special mission for the Church. His contributions, warmth, and talents will long be remembered by this province whose name he enhanced by his presence and work.
