The Dominicans Province of the Most Holy Name of Jesus

Fr. Ambrose Francis Wilson, OP

Fr. Ambrose was a "very retiring man and a profound student."  He was born in Stockton, California and was one of the first local vocations.  He entered the Dominicans at the age of 19.  After preliminary studies in Benicia, California, he went to study in Louvain, Belgium receiving a degree to teach in a seminary.  In our archives there is a passport he used for traveling freely in other countries.  For a description of him there is no photo identification; instead, there is a written down physical description.  At twenty-five years of age he was 5' 5 1/2'', with a high forehead, hazel eyes, small nose, small mouth, round chin, black hair, fair complexion, and full face.

He was Novice Master for many years and was elected Prior of St. Dominic's in San Francisco twice.  He died in 1911 at the age of 54 of Brights disease.  "Brights disease" was the term for one who had albumen protein in the kidneys.  He served many years in the Order, may God so reward him.
