First Profession At the
completion of the novitiate, each friar makes his first profession of vows. He will
make a vow of obedience, and inclusively the vow of chastity and poverty.
The first
profession of vows is made for three years. Each friar needs to discern carefully, what is in the
best interests of the Province, and what is in his best interests. Both of these
interests are important. A friar may, by choice, make profession of vows for less than three years. The friar will continue in initial formation
renewing his vows as needed, until his sixth year with the Order. The next step
will then be to make solemn vows, which means "until death." There is
plenty of time to discern this vocation and prepare for a life of ministry as member of
the Order of Preachers.
