The Ongoing Adventures of the
Black and White Brigade: The Novice Class of 2002-2003 storm the Southern Part of the
Western Dominican Province
TUCSON, ARIZONA (as told by
Brother Kohl Maria)As we drove into town we were welcomed
with a pleasant surpriserain. After
living in Tucson for four years, prior to my entering the Order, I can safely claim that
rain is a rare delight in Tucson, making our stay all the better. The Dominicans operate two Newman Centers in the
state of Arizona:

Fortunately, our stay included residing
at the Newman Center itself; thus, we had access to the main chapel, the local Dominican
community, and the main campus of the University of Arizona (UofA). For the few days of our visit, our usual routine
included praying the Divine Office (also known as the Liturgy of the Hours or Christian
Prayer) with the Dominican community and parishioners, attending daily Mass, adoring the
Blessed Sacrament in Eucharistic Adoration each evening, taking long walks around the UofA
campus, and preparing for Sunday preaching, in which we offer our individual
autobiographical testimony during Mass after the homily.
A high point during our stay in Tucson
was our visiting San Xavier del Bac, a recently renovated missionary church staffed by the
(OFM) Franciscans. The Franciscan friars we
met were kind enough to give us a tour of the church. The pastor gave a detailed
tour of the churchs nave and sanctuary, a peek into the sacristy, and a walk through
the friars cloister.
