Feast of the Presentation

The Church, our Faith Community, sets aside this important celebration after the birth of Jesus Christ to recall the day that the Lord was presented in the temple. This Presentation prompted a vital proclamation of the Kingdom of God. Both Simeon and Anna saw, heard, and felt (Simeon held Jesus) the proclamation of the Gospel—the Gospel Incarnated before them.

The Eternal Lord was presented in time. Obviously, the temporal presentation of the infant Jesus in the temple occurred before the adult Jesus’ proclamation beyond the sanctuary. After the infant Jesus’ presentation, gradually the adult Lord revealed and proclaimed the fuller reason for His coming to dwell among humans: to proclaim the message and meaning of the Gospel to every man and woman, so that all might see, hear, and feel the Good News Incarnated before them.

Presenting and Proclaiming

In our own lives, there too were a series of presentations before we began the proclamation of the Gospel. We were presented to our parents after our birth. We were presented for Baptism. We were presented for First communion. We were presented for Confirmation—and we friars were presented for ordination. We were presented many times; and each instance was a gradual revelation to us and to others of the message and meaning of the Gospel.

Our Christian life is meant to proclaim what was presented to us: we proclaim to others the message of the Gospel—the Kingdom of God. Just as Jesus Christ (proclaims and) proclaimed the message and meaning of the Gospel to every man and woman, so that all might see, hear, and feel the Good News Incarnated before them; we too are to present the same to others.

Our effective presentation as adults of the Gospel message proclaims the sound and summoning power of the Birth, Life, and Death of Jesus Christ in an attractive and understandable way. Our efficacious presentation of the message is meant to transform rather than merely to conserve.  Our real/essential presentation of the Good News is to proclaim the God of life and love, the God of light and infinity.  Our authentic presentation of the Gospel message—presented and effected in time—will prepare us (and all) for the Eternal Kingdom.
